PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an alkali alcoholate in high space yield by reacting an alkali amalgam with an alcohol in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: An alkali amalgam is catalytically reacted with a 1-4C alcohol in the presence of carbides and nitrides of metals of chromium, molybdenum and tungsten and titanium carbide to give an alkali alcoholate. The decomposition of the alkali amalgam is excellently promoted by the carbides and the nitrides of the metals of the group VIa of the periodic table and titanium carbide. The carbides are produced on the surface of a carbon carrier material or in a zone in the vicinity of the surface by the reaction between the carrier material made into small pieces with carbon and a metal compound. The catalytic reaction between the amalgam and the alcohol is advanced at high speed, continuously or discontinuously. |
