Disclosed is an aqueous-based composition that, based on total weight of the composition, comprises from 1 to 50 weight percent of a water soluble urethane polymer which is a liquid at room temperature and has a number average molecular weight of from 600 to 80000 wherein said polymer is the reaction product of a monoahl with an isocyanate-terminated intermediate obtained by coupling a polyisocyanate with a polyahl, and wherein said polymer is substantially free of any isocyanate functionality or any isocyanate-reactive functionality. Such compositions have value as a thermal quenching agent to provide cooling rates and cooling times such that the risk of cracking or stress formation is reduced relative to the use of traditional quenching agents such as water or polyoxyalkylene glycols.
