Automatic clutch control method for motor vehicle

The power train of the vehicle has an automatic control for the clutch operated by a servo-system. The transmission control monitors the vehicle dynamics as well as the setting of the gear selector and the operation of the gear box. If a fault is detected in the electronic control a failsafe control disengages the clutch or holds it in the engaged position, depending on the vehicle dynamics. If the vehicle is moving when the control system has a failure the clutch is kept engaged to enable the vehicle to be moved to a safe location. If the vehicle is stopped then the clutch is disengaged by the safety control.
