A calender (K) has a deflection controllable roller (100) with a rotary hollow roller (1) and a non-rotary crosshead (3). Hydrostatic supporting elements (14) can be radially displaced on the crosshead (3) against the inner circumference (4) of the hollow roller (1). The supporting elements (14) have hydrostatic bearing pockets (39) at their supporting surface (24). The supporting elements (14) are pressed by a cylinder chamber (49) with a small cross-section. In the event of a failure which affects the calendered web, all cylinder chambers (49) can be hydraulically relieved, so that no more pressure and force are applied by the supporting elements (14).
