A high pressure cleaning apparatus has a positive displacement pump with at least one pump chamber into which a suction pipe opens through an inlet valve and out of which extends a pressure pipe through an outlet valve, and a device for periodically altering the volume of the pump chamber. In order to improve the design and operation of such an apparatus, a stopper made of a rubber-elastic, incompressible material is set into the pump chamber to close it. The stopper height equals at least one third of its cross-section and of the cross-section of the pump chamber in the area in which the stopper is located. A reciprocating element arranged outside the pump chamber is supported on the stopper and is periodically moved by a drive towards and away from the pump chamber, periodically deforming the stopper into the pump chamber.
