The automatic system, operable from the ground, for covering a container mounted on a transporter chassis comprises a cover winder (7) fixed to the chassis in front of the container. This winder contains a wound cover and has a cover outlet. Two poles (12) are pivoted on the chassis to the right and to the left of the container. Each pole has its lower end pivoted on a support (15) fixed to the chassis under the container. Each pole upper end is constitutes a fork (16) pivoted at one end of a rod, located along the winder outlet, to which the cover end is fixed. The pole supports fixed to the chassis do not pass beyond the transverse limit imposed by the road regulations. The poles are pivoted on the rod and to the supports such that the rods are outside this limit during covering or uncovering the container but can be dismantled without recourse to a tool.
