To monitor the movements of the component parts of a spinner, especially to prevent a collision between the bobbin rail and the flyer, the power taken by one of the units (17) is registered at the drive (19) for at least part of its movement path, or the drive (19) output is established. A fault signal is generated if the monitored value exceeds and/or falls short of a nominal value. Also claimed is a spinner with a sensor to register the power used or delivered, to drive the moving part (17) over at least part of its movement path, with its signals delivered to an evaluation and control unit (33). The evaluation/control unit (33) compares the sensor signals with a nominal value, continuously or at time intervals during the movement path of the part (17), and generates a fault signal on detection of a deviation outside permissable tolerances.
