Automatic transmission with epicyclic gearing

The automatic transmission incorporates a three-element torque-converter (15-17) and a set of epicyclic gears (3) with brake bands and clutches. There is a lock-up clutch (12) for the torque-converter and a freewheel clutch (35) for the reactor wheel (17). There is a planetary gear train (11) between the turbine wheel (16) and the reactor wheel. The ring gear (r1) is attached to the turbine wheel and the planet gears are attached (20) to the driven member (21) of the lock-up clutch. The sun gear is connected to the reactor wheel and the freewheel clutch.
