Moving relatively voluminous packing units e.g. containers in shipping ports

A conveyor belt (7,8,9), carrying a packing unit (4), is fixed. The packing unit is moved towards a second connecting conveyor belt to which it is transferred. This can maintain or change the direction of movement of the packing unit during transfer to a third conveyor belt. The direction of movement of the packing unit depends on a pattern (10-18;32-35) in which the interconnecting conveyor belts are arranged between the put-on and take-off locations. The path followed is determined by a central location control.
