A modified lignosulphonate (I) used as a carbon source for the denitrification of sewage has a freezing point less than -2 (preferably -8) deg. C. - A carbon source containing (I) and used for reducing the nitrogen content in e.g. sewage has a freezing point or solidifying temperature lower than -2 (preferably -8) deg. C. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for the preparation of (I) in the carbon source, by treating lignosulphonate at 95-250 deg. C and a pressure from atmospheric pressure up to 50 kp/cm2, during which a complexing agent is added to minimize destruction of carbohydrates.
