FIELD: petrochemical industry, particularly chemical treatment of clay solutions for drilling petroleum and gas wells. SUBSTANCE: drilling mud comprises (wt parts):1 protecting reagent; 1.25-40.0 clay and 16.5-315.0 water. The protecting reagent includes acrylic copolymer containing monomer units, wt. -%: acryl amide or methacryl amide, 20.-57.5; acrylic or methacrylic acid, 10.0-50.0; and 17.5- 50.0 acrylic acid nitrile, 17.5-50.0. EFFECT: improved properties of the heat and salt resistant drilling mud.
