Swimming pool water is sterilised by ultraviolet radiation. Water from the pool is pumped in a closed loop through a filter, through the ultra violet treatment vessel (16), then back to the pool. Water enters and leaves the treatment vessel by tubes connected to openings (7 and 8) in its sides, one of which is positioned higher than the other. The vessel is a vertical cylindrical shape with axial openings (9 and 10) at each end. These allow a tubular ultra violet lamp (13) to be inserted enclosed in a tube of silica glass (12) linked to a source of electricity. The treatment vessel (16) may be manufactured in a single piece (as shown) or in two identical halves joined horizontally by flanges. The two halves can be rotated relative to each other to change the relative positions of the inlet and outlet. A sealing ring is embedded in grooves in the flanges to prevent leakage. The inlet (7) and outlet (8) ports are positioned radially or axially in the vessel, and following or parallel to its generatrices.
