The smart card has an embedded micro processor and coupled to this is a separate display controller 5 that after each financial transaction transmits data to its memory. The display controller action is separate from the processor and is supplied by a solar panel element 7 with data being shown on an LCD panel 6. Communication is one way from the processor to the controller and protects the controller memory from external manipulation.
