Production of blood-compatible materials is claimed, for use in medicine as implants, extracorporeal appliances, apparatus which comes into contact with blood or containers for maintaining blood, and without the systemic supply of anticoagulants when subjected to prolonged contact with blood. The process comprises selectively modifying the surface of the materials by the covalent bonding of water-soluble, synthetic oligomers or polymers or their derivatives that the thrombocytes do not adhere to.
