Monitoring gearbox operation

A method for monitoring the functions of a motor vehicle transmission 311 coupled to an engine 300 via a clutch 302. The transmission 311 has at least one position-variable gearbox element 314 whose position change causes a change in the gearbox ratio. A sensor device 320 is provided which detects the position of this position-variable gearbox element 314 and a computer unit 350 is provided which checks from a predetermined assessment criterion whether this position-variable gearbox element is located in a predefined target position. With one embodiment of the invention this assessment criterion is detected within the scope of a learning process.
