The device (1) is used to sand at least one parallel surface on a block workpiece, and has a sensing roller (7) which can rotate about an axis (6) which is perpendicular to the direction (Pf1) of advance of the workpiece, and which is parallel to the sanded surface. The roller can press or engage on the latter and has a mounting (8) which can be adjusted continuously perpendicular to the axis of rotation, against a restoring force. The mounting connects the roller to a toothed rack which is aligned in the direction of adjustment. The rack enmeshes with a measuring pinion, or cogwheel, which is connected to a rotary transducer (12).
