Automatic sorting of objects and in particular postal items

Letters and postal items are identified and sorted in an automatic process based upon machine optical reading of an address code. The code numbers 5 are printed on the letter in a matrix form and the specific code is selected by ringing numbers 6 with a pen. The matrix of coded numbers may be provided by being printed on postage stamps.
