Nicotine is absorbed systemically from the intestine in therapeutic amounts for the treatment of nicotine responsive conditions, particularly inflammatory skin conditions, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, depression and to assist in the cessation of smoking. The nicotine is ideally delivered for absorption from the colon as a nicotinepolyacrylate complex in a sustained and delayed released enteric coated capsule. In this way, the high peak plasma levels, which normally give rise to side-effects associated with nicotine are reduced.
