A polynucleotide cassette containing elements of herpes simplex virus and Epstein-Barr virus which can be incorporated into a suitable infectious particle capable of infecting and being propagated in mitotic and non-mitotic cells is provided. Such vectors are useful for the delivery and expression of heterologous nucleic acid sequences in target cells.
