Distance measuring system for vehicle

The system consists of a pair of light sensitive assemblies (3,4) made up of CCD type optical sensor panels (31-3m,41-4m) in parallel at a specific distance apart. They are located on image surfaces each of which corresponds to a pair of parallel axes of optical systems (CG,1,2). The light sensitive assemblies are located in the longitudinal direction to the sensor panels. Image information (311-31m,411-41m) provided from the sensor panels is processed (91) to determine the distance to an object. A device (101) gives an alarm if it detects poor visibility. This can arise if optical sensor elements in any measurement windows detect conditions of poor contrast or found to be functioning abnormally for a prolonged period of time.
