A technique for maintaining a ratio between the transmission data in at least two classes, such as high priority and low priority, comprises setting selectable quotas for the classes of data, favouring the transmission of one class, counting data groups of that class as they are transmitted, determining when the number of data groups in that class equals the selectable reference number and then switching to preference for the transmission of another class, and maintaining that preference until the respective quota has been met. Application is to date in the form of frames or packets, and stored in buffer memories prior to transmission over e.g. an Ethernet network. For "multi-media" traffic, television signals would be high priority and electronic mail would be low priority. |
