PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a medicine capable of suppressing proliferation of a tumor cell and carrying out treatment and preventive treatment of patients having a malignant tumor such as cancer by including an inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases. SOLUTION: This medicine contains at least one tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase selected from a group consisting of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (hereinafter referred to as TIMPs) as an active ingredient. It is preferable that the medicine contains the TIMP-1 or the TIMP-2 as a main active ingredient. A recombinant tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (hereinafter referred to as rTIMPs-1) can be exemplified as the TIMP 1, and a rTIMP-2 can be exemplified as the TIMP-2. The rTIMP-1 is expressed by transformant cells obtained by using a yeast, Escherichia coli, etc., as host cells and prepared by purifying the resultant gene product. The medicine directly acts on tumor cells and is effective in reduction of tumors in a primary lesion and a metastatic focus. |
