The bivalves (2) are stacked on a tray (1) having a cylindrical hollow mast (3) emerging at its end adjacent to the tray, on which the bivalves are anchored. The mast is provided with longitudinal slot. The packaging procedure comprises enveloping the bivalves with a thermo-retractable plastics film (9) then heating the film. During the heating stage air at ambient or lower temperature is blown into the mast interior through one end. The other end of the mast is sealed causing the air to be forced through the slots. During heating of the thermo-retractable packaging film the bivalves are air cooled in order to prevent their overheating.
