The ultra-violet source has transparent straight quartz tube (2) filled with gas at high pressure. A reflector (7) is placed over the tube. The reflector has two lateral wings (14) which run parallel to the tube and which are positioned symmetrically on either side of the tube. The profile of the transverse section of the reflector is parabolic or elliptic. The summit of the generating curve is at a distance d from the axis of the tube, corresponding to focal length. This distance is bounded by the summation of the distances between the axis of the tube and the internal surface of the reflector over the tube and the thickness of tube in the axial plane.
