Hydration of methylthiopropionaldehyde cyanohydrin (2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanonitrile) or methylthiopropioaminonitrile (2-amino-4-methylthiobutanonitrile) to produce the corresponding amide (2-hydroxy- or 2-amino-4-methylthiobutanamide) is effected in water in the presence of manganese oxide on a silica support.
