The invention discloses precipitated silica having: a BET specific surface area of 60 to 150 m<2>/g; an RDA abrasiveness of 30 to 90; a refraction coefficient of 1400 to 1450; a DOP oil absorption of 115 to 170 ml/100 g, preferably of more than 120 ml/100 g to 170 ml/100 g and a d50 particle median diameter of 6 to 13 mu m. The invention also discloses toothpaste containing the said silica in a proportion of 5 to 50 % of its weight.
