Swashplate compressor e.g. for motor vehicle air-conditioning system

The swashplate compressor has a cylinder block (14) held inside a housing (12) and is driven by a drive (15) onto which is fitted the swashplate (72). The drive end of the shaft is located inside a drive shaft housing (20) which supports the drive pulley on its bearings. A large friction plate (68) bolted to the end of the drive shaft transmits the drive force from the pulley. The inside of the drive shaft housing has a support ring (20) with a loose fit over the drive shaft. The ring supports the drive shaft if the outer end is sheared off eg. due to seizing of the swashplate during starting. The support ring is located against an internal flange in the bore inside the drive shaft housing. A circlip secures the ring into the fitting.
