Production of self-supporting material, especially for chromatography

Production of a self-supporting material (SSM), especially a chromatographic separation phase material comprises: (a) processing a mixture of (a1) silica, (a2) glass material and (a3) sodium silicate to give a homogeneous mass; (b) making this into a moulding; (c) treating with mineral acid; (d) washing, preferably with an aqueous solvent; and (e) drying. Also claimed is (i) a mixture (I) for the production of SSM, containing 3-30 wt% (a1), 1-20 wt% (a2) and 50-96 wt% (a3); (ii) a material, especially chromatographic material as above, consisting of silica gel (a1) bonded with (a2) to form a self- supporting network structure, and made by the above process.
