Substituted benzyl derivatives of polyalkylene-polyamines of formula (I) and their salts and metal complexes are new. n, m = 2-4; p = 2 or 3; x = 0-2; R1, R4 = 1-4C alkyl; or a group of formula (a); Z1 = OH or OR; Z2, Z3 = H, OH or OR; R = 1-8C alkyl; R2, R3 = H, 1-4C alkyl, (a) or R5R5'N(CH2)p; R1', R4', R5' = H or 1-4C alkyl; and R5 = 1-4C alkyl or (a); provided that: (1) at least one of R1-R5 = (a) and (2) when R1=R4 = (a) and x = 0 or 1, then Z1 or Z1 and Z2 are not OR'; R' = 1-6C alkyl.
