The selection system includes a movement estimator which calculates values for an evaluation function, with each value corresponding to a block of pixels in a reference window relative to a current block of pixels. The relative position of these blocks is described by a movement vector. The smallest value of the evaluation function is determined and the norms of the associated vectors are compared to this smallest value. The vector with the smallest norm is selected. The vector coordinates are coded in 2's complement notation, and a modified absolute value for one of the coordinates is obtained by inverting the bits of the coordinate when the coordinate is negative. The reference window is swept over the image so the movement vectors are an increasing function.
