A tertiary amine oxide (c.f. Specification 437,566) which is sparingly soluble in mercerizing lyes, is used in conjunction with agents promoting solubility in mercerizing processes. Phenols, cresols and highly sulphonated oils are examples of agents promoting solubility. Glycol monobutylether and glycerol mono and di-alkyl ethers may also be added. In examples: (1) cresol or a mixture of crude cresol and glacial acetic acid is used in conjunction with butyldimethylamineoxide in mercerizing processes; (2) cresol is used with dimethylaniline oxide in mercerizing. n-Butyl-piperidineoxide, benzylpiperidineoxide or dimethylcyclohexylamineoxide are mentioned. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of propylphenols and diethylcyclohexylamineoxide, methyloxyethylcyclohexylamine oxide or mixtures of the latter. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
