The mechanism comprises a torsion spring which acts as an energy storage device. A torsion bar (10) can be used as the spring, comprising cylindrical components (25) joined together in series by ribs. One end of the spring can be secured to the door-leaf so that it cannot turn, and one by a coupling member and-or sleeve to the housing of the mechanism. A transmission mechanism can be included whose velocity ratio varies with the angle for which the door is opened, and typically incorporating non-circular gears. The output side of the transmission mechanism (4,5) can be coupled to the spring.
