A plastic bottle crusher consists of a frame (3) with two end flanges (1,2), a slider (5) with guides travelling along two metal rods attached to the flanges, and a ratchet mechanism with a rack (6) connected to the slider and two pawls (7,11) one on a lever (8) and a non-return pawl. By rocking the lever and rack forces the slider against a plastic bottle inserted between the slider and the frame end flange (1), which has a hole (1.1) in it for the bottle neck. The rack is advanced by the pawl (11) on the lever end, and is held in place by the second pawl (7) on the lever's return stroke. In a variant of the design the lever is connected directly to the slider and the rack is set in the frame base.
