A photographic element is provided comprising a support having situated thereon a silver halide emulsion layer, the emulsion layer comprising a compound of the formula: Z-SO2S-Au(I)-L (I) wherein Z represents an alkyl, aryl, or heterocyclic group; and L represents a thioether, selenoether or telluroether containing ligand.
