Disclosed is a digital audio recording and/or reproducing system for a digital recording medium, in which the audio signal sampled according to a new recording method can be reproduced in an audio device having a sampling frequency in accordance with an existing recording method. The recording and/or reproduction system comprises a reference unit former (10) for receiving a pulse-code-modulated digital audio signal and forming a reference unit sequence each reference unit having a predetermined size from the received digital audio signal. A formatting unit (20) formats the reference unit sequence into a recording unit sequence in which at least one recording unit has at least one data block among an odd-numbered data block and an even-numbered data block which exist in at least one reference unit, and inserts additional data to produce a formatted data. A recording unit (30) records the formatted data on a digital recording medium. A reader reads the formatted data from the digital recording medium and discriminates a sampling frequency of the digital audio signal contained in the formatted data. An inverse formatting unit inversely formats the formatted data in the form that enables the data to be digital-to-analog-converted by a digital-to-analog converter and signal-processes the inversely formatted data, based on comparison between the discriminated sampling frequency and the operating frequency of the D/A converter. <IMAGE>
