PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately ensure the continuity of a coupling so as to inhibit stress concentration on a coupling part by inserting a honeycomb body in a metal case and fixing the same to form a support, bearing a catalyst on the support, and then butting the metal case and a reducer having a different sectional form to be welded each other. SOLUTION: A catalyst converter 5 is formed by heat resisting steel. The converter has a cylindrical metal case 1, and a gas conduit 2a connected to the exhaust gas system and a funnel-like reducer 2 formed by a cone part 2b having a taper wall are joined 6 to both ends thereof. At the time of joining, after a honeycomb body 7 having a catalyst for purifying exhaust gas born on a support 10 is inserted and fixed in the metal case 1, one member to be joined 11 of the metal case 1 and the reducer 2 is clamped by a chuck 13, and the other member 12 to be joined is clamped by a chuck 15 connected to a rotary shaft 14, the other member to be joined being rotated while contact- pressing the end faces of both members to be joined to join both members to each other. |
