PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the edge area detector at a low cost with a simple configuration by reducing a time required to detect an edge area of an image more than that by a conventional edge area detector having been used for an image area separator. SOLUTION: The edge area detector that detects an edge of an image expressed in image data based on received image data is provided with a smoothing means 44 applying smoothing processing to a noted picture element of received image data by using a smoothing matrix, a density difference detection means 46 detecting a density difference of two picture elements in existence at both sides of the noted picture element based on the received image data and a discrimination means 48 discriminating whether or not the noted picture element is a picture element of an edge area of an image based on the density of the noted picture element after the smoothing and the detection result by the density detection means and providing an output of a discrimination result. |
