The method involves feeding fuel via a fuel pump from a low pressure region to a high pressure region and dosed delivery of the fuel into the engine's combustion chambers by controlling (115) injectors (110). At least one engine control parameter is influenced depending on a temp. value so that the temp. value does not exceed a threshold value. The temp. value can be dependent on the temp. of the fuel, esp. in the high pressure region. The fuel pump (140) power is reduced if the temp. exceeds the threshold value.
