Atmospheric burner with catalyst-coated honeycomb element

Conventional atmospheric partial pre-mixing burner has an injector (2) and coaxial gas nozzle, with secondary air fed in downstream of the honeycomb element (7). If several are used, the burners are arranged at spacing so the resulting intervals can be used for secondary air feed. In service, the combustion mix is injected (5) into the gas space (6) and thence through the honeycomb elements for partial catalytic conversion so the flue gas and mix (13) escape up through the honeycomb channels, leaving an unburnt mix to burn with flames (14) above the honeycomb. On starting, the entire mix is ignited so the flames heat up the honeycomb element to convert catalytically at operating temperature. The air fed through the channels cools the honeycomb together with de-coupled radiation heat off the non-combustion side of the element. Air feed to the mix gives lean flames only.
