Mouthwash compositions are described comprising cetylpyridinium chloride and amidobetaine amphoteric surfactants of formula (I): RC(O)NH(CH2)aN<+>(R<1>)(R<2>)(CH2)bCO2<->, wherein R is C10-20 alkyl; R<1> and R<2> are independently C1-4 alkyl; a is an integer from 1 to 4; and b is an integer from 1 to 4.
