According to the method, a second output value is generated from an input value using a different processing method from that used to produce a first output value from the input value. The two output values are compared and a processing fault detected if the two output values are not related according to the two processing methods. Alternatively, a second processor (12) can use the first processing method to produce the second output value from the input value, and if the output values do not coincide, the first processor (1) can then use the second method to produce an output value to enable location of the fault.
