Nitrosation of a CH-acid compound of formula X1-CHR-X2 (I) comprises reaction with nitrous acid, released from a nitrite by another acid, in presence of water and an organic solvent (or solvent mixture) (II). The novelty is that, (II) is at least partially miscible with water, and is used in an amount (relative to water) such that (I), the nitrosation product, water, (II) and at least part of the nitrite and the HNO2-releasing acid form a homogeneous phase, in which the reaction occurs and from which at least the majority of the salt formed on the release of HNO2 is precipitated. R = H or organic group; and X1, X2 = electron withdrawing groups. |
