PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition containing an alkali metal hypochlorite and a substance exhibiting alkaline state, having controlled chlorine ion content, exhibiting excellent bleaching power and storage stability and generating suppressed amount of harmful chlorine gas. SOLUTION: This composition contains (A) 0.5-10wt.% of an alkali metal hypochlorite (preferably sodium hypochlorite) and (B) 0.1-10wt.% of a substance exhibiting alkaline state (preferably sodium hydroxide). The chlorine ion content of the composition is adjusted to <=0.5 times the molar concentration of the component A in terms of the molar concentration of sodium chloride. The adjustment of the chlorine ion content is preferably carried out by using sodium hypochlorite of low or medium salt content having an NaCl content decreased to 0.1-4wt.% by the desalting treatment of sodium hypochlorite. The objective composition may be incorporated with a surfactant, preferably an anionic surfactant of the formula R<1> O-(CH2 CH2 O)m -SO3 M (R<1> is a 10-18C straight or blanched- chain alkyl; (m) is 1-10; M is a cation). |
