摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel consumption property in lean combustion due to layered combustion under a low load, secure hig output under a highload, and shifting the layered combustion to the even combustion while securing satisfactory operability. SOLUTION: Under a low load, fuel is partially supplied around an ignition device 8 by means of a swirl generation means and fuel supply means 11, 13 for performing layered combustion, while under a high load, the fuel is diffused in whole of a combustion chamber for performing even combustion. The fuel is gradually increased according to the increasing load for controlling an engine output. In an intermediate load area during shifting from the layered combustion to even combustion, fuel is supplied both partially to a portion around the ignition device 8 and to whole of the combustion chamber. In such a shifting area, an air excess ratioλis larger than the value one all over the area. As the load increases, the air excess area is decreased. In accordance therewith, a fuel supply amount for layered combustion is reduced to be lower than the fuel supply amount for even combustion at the completion of shifting by a control means 16.
