PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate inclusion of impurities and construct an EL element able to make uniform light emission by generating conductor patterns on a transparent electrode formed on a transparent base board, and forming independently a dot-form electrode of EL material between conductor patterns. SOLUTION: An electrode 12 consisting of a transparent conductive layer such as an ITO is formed over the whole surface of a transparent base board 10. On the surface of this electrode 12, conductor patterns 15 made of material having good electric conductiveness are generated in a mesh or stripe form. A light emission layer made of an EL material 14 is formed between these conductor patterns 15, and outside thereof a dot-form electrode 16 is formed from Al, Mg, Li, Ag, In. The structure of this electrode 16 is such that dots having a size from several mm to several hundreds ofμm are arranged in a matrix form. Each of the dot electrodes 16 is connected with the drive circuit of IC, etc., According to this configuration, the resistance of the part with electrode 12 is very small, and unevenness of the emitted light brightness owing to the position of the electrode 12 is nullified.
