<p>A universal socket wrench (10) comprising a housing (14) having an internal chamber (16) which is open at a first end (18). A bundle of members (20) having relatively large cross-sectional area-to-length ratios is supported in a slidable relationship within the chamber (16). The first ends (18) of the members (20) are arranged for engagement with a fastener. The members (20) have a generally nonuniform cross-sectional area, and are arranged in sets, with a fragmentary, asymmetrical shape. The members (20) are supported within the housing (14) by outwardly extending flanges (38) on the second ends (19) of the members (20), which conform to and engage with inset shoulders (40) on the chamber (16). The second ends (19) of the members (20) are biased by springs (42) so that when they are displaced, the springs (42) tend to return the members (20) to their original positions. The second end of the springs (42) seat in bores (56) in an insert (50) and a separate backing plate (62) positioned to retain the springs (42).</p> |
