In a motor vehicle having an automatically-controlled clutch 3 between the engine 2 and a variable -ratio transmission 4 the clutch is automatically engaged to initiate a creeping movement of the vehicle when the engine is on, the transmission is in gear, the accelerator pedal 20 is not depressed and the brakes are not applied. This entails or takes place at least substantially simultaneously with an increase of the engine torque. If the creeping movement is interrupted, e.g., as a result of the application of the brakes, the clutch is disengaged and the engine torque is reduced. The variable-ratio transmission may be automatically or manually controlled. The clutch may be a friction clutch, possibly a torque converter lock-up clutch, or a magnetic powder clutch.
|
