The invention relates to a process for preparing vinyl aromatic polymers having a high degree of syndiotacticity and a high molecular weight comprising contacting at least one polymerizable vinyl aromatic monomer under polymerization conditions with a catalyst comprising a reduced transition metal complex and a co-catalyst. The invention is characterized in that the transition metal complex consists of a reduced transition metal, chosen from groups 4-6 of the Periodic Table of the Elements, with a multidentate monoanionic ligand and with two monoanionic ligands.
