The present invention provides a layered coding method in an ATM which variably allots a channel according to a user's request and transmits coded video data to the channel, thus performing a simpler and preciser coding. This inventive method includes the steps of: dividing an input image for coding and converting it into a vector type (210); finding a code vector corresponding to each vector obtained from the step according to a preset codebook (220); performing a variable length coding with respect to each code vector from the step (220) (230); dividing a variable length code from the step (23) into a first layer and a second layer so as to optimize an average bit rate and an average distortion and transmitting the same (240). |
