PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel property detecting device to detect fuel property without performing feedback control. SOLUTION: From an amount of intake air and an amount of injection fuel, an air-fuel ratio INAF of intake air is calculated, and from an output from an air-fuel ratio sensor, an air-fuel ratio EXAF is calculated (step 26). A differenceΔA/F=INAF-EXAF therebetween is determined (step 27).ΔA/F is compared with a predetermined given value AH and when an absolute value ofΔA/F is below AH or less, its decided that fuel is stand fuel. WhenΔA/F is a positive value exceeding a given value AH, it is decided that fuel is light fuel and whenΔA/F is a negative value exceeding a given value AH, it is decided that fuel is heavy fuel.
